At Tribe in Transition, I empower conscious healing practitioners, sacred activists, and creatives to navigate their Soul Journey, move through the challenges of healing, and gather the skills and confidence to contribute to a transformed new world.
My family provided an initiation into the soul work of conscious healing. They gave me the essential physical nurturance I needed yet the emotional environment was toxic and oppressive to my spirit and activated a strong drive towards freedom. I also had a deep longing to free my mother from my father’s dominance which developed into a lifelong mission to liberate myself as a woman and then to offer whatever I was learning for the empowerment of other women. The trauma I experienced in my family had long term consequences and, I made choices at a soul level that shaped my life to come.
When I left university, aged 22, I had no idea who I was or what I wanted to do with my life. I wasn’t enthusiastic about returning to school as a teacher, but I stumbled into it and soon discovered it is one thread of my vocation. My first teaching job in a tough girls’ comprehensive school in London was a baptism by fire and I’ve practiced many forms of education ever since. “Educare” means to draw out, and over my lifetime I’ve created intentional learning spaces for exploring common human themes which draw out participant’s authentic truth and wisdom.
Alongside my curiosity with the outer world, I also experienced spontaneous inner awakenings such as the welling-up of poetry aged 29. I was delighted to discover I had an authentic voice far wiser than my personality and I became fascinated by the rich inner world I hadn’t known existed. Enticed by myth, archetype and symbolism, I began my exploration of the imaginal realm and became an archaeologist of soul, patiently uncovering the multi-coloured patterns of wholeness that lie beneath the coverings of earth and history.
In my early 30’s, the whole of Scotland became my classroom when I took a job as a Field Officer for a national adult education unit. This was a joyous leap into freedom after being confined in the stuffy rooms of school and family. My new role challenged me to push through my fears of speaking out and being seen and revealed an innate gift for leadership and for creating and delivering innovative training materials to leaders in community and health education. This took me by surprise me and allowed me to give form to my mission to equip people with the skills to empower themselves and their communities. There were big challenges along the way but overall, this chapter provided an exciting playground for action and adventure. I was fired by a vision for a more co-operative world, and a passion for lifelong whole person learning. I had responded to the call of Soul and I’ve lived and evolved this inner calling ever since.
In my early 40’s, during an intense period of disillusionment, I was introduced to my first meditation practice, which had an immediate and profoundly healing effect on me. In response to an irresistible pull inward, I determined to pursue my passion for writing and to follow my creative process wherever it might lead me. I let go of my business, my therapy practice, my home, professional community and friends, and chose to live on the margins of social “normality”, finding sanctuary in expansive landscapes and big skies, first in the north-west Highlands of Scotland, where I wrote my first book about women and the creative process, and then in the South Island of New Zealand. My physical Soul Journey had begun.
Now I really became an edge-dweller. Whereas my previous life chapter had been about action, experimentation, relationship, accumulation, building and being “out there”, this new chapter was about learning to sit, wait, surrender, let go and be in the unknown. This was a big challenge and the spiritual practices that came to support me took me to places therapy hadn’t begun to touch. Meditation and spiritual practice were tools for a thorough process of clearing and cleansing that echoed down the soul line. I was still half asleep to what I had chosen, yet irresistibly drawn forward and committed to following my soul.
In my 50’s I took another leap into the unknown. After a decade dedicated to spiritual practice and writing, in 2000 I became intensely creative and began to invent my own unique approaches to transformational learning. Driven by a fiery passion, I wrote books, made websites, ran workshops and programmes and conducted numerous experiments in this new, holistic discipline. But it would take many years of creative experimentation before a clear form and direction emerged.
In 2015 I returned to the UK to support my brother through a difficult transition and a year later he died, leaving me the only surviving member of my family. A few months earlier my dearest soul friend and co-creative partner had died also and a few years later we entered the pandemic and lockdown. These losses catapulted me into one of the most challenging periods of my transformation. Over the course of what I have come to call “my seven years of grief” I was taken apart, stripped of all my powers and then put back together in a new way. There were big gifts within this, including the creation of the Sitting with Death and Choosing Life Programme. The integration I achieved through this work of raising awareness around grief and death confirmed that being willing to descend to the bottom of grief holds the key, not only for individual transformation, but for a positive life-enhancing shift in our culture. Healing and creativity are two threads that weave together the light and the shadow of human existence into a beautiful garment in which suffering and joy are lovers lying in each other’s arms.
In 2024, I completed my fifth book, A Story of Transformation, How Grieving My Brother’s Death Brought Gifts of Healing and Awakened Me to Our Power to Renew the World. Charting my journey through grief to a conscious choice to live fully enabled me to harvest the fruits of a lifetime’s conscious healing process.
